Calling All Fathers
As people dedicated to Christ, following Him in whatever role He calls us, we can reflect His very presence. That includes that call to be husbands and wives, mothers and fathers - the Holy Spirit is available to empower us to demonstrate God's strength and guidance and provide strong examples for our families. Deuteronomy 6 (ESV) states:
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
The National Fatherhood Initiative has released this startling statistic, based on 2025 U.S. Census data: "18.2 million children, 1 in 4, live without a biological, step, or adoptive father in the home.* That organization's website says, "Research shows that a father's absence affects children in numerous unfortunate ways, while a father's presence makes a positive difference in the lives of both children and mothers."
In attempting to strengthen fathers and the institution of fatherhood, incorporating Christian principles, Mark Merrill and the organization Family First launched All Pro Dad. A recent Spectrum News article quoted him as saying: "For decades, we have worked alongside fathers in communities across the country, and we’ve seen firsthand the difference encouragement and support can make,” adding, “Through All Pro Dad, our mission is for every child to know and experience the love of a dad. We’re honored to partner with Ohio to expand this work and help more fathers win the everyday moments that matter most.”
The Ohio Department of Children and Youth has partnered with All Pro Dad "in order to connect Ohio fathers with resources, encouragement and connections to help them stay engaged in their children’s lives."
Just weeks ago, according to the article, "...a statewide media campaign, 'Win the Everyday' launched on social media, digital platforms, connected TV and on signage through DCY and Family First to support the initiative." The All Pro Dad School Chapter Program and the All Pro Dad Experience will be implemented throughout the state.
And, a high-profile former coach and sports broadcaster has become the face of All Pro Dad. Tony Dungy co-founder of the organization, at a press conference announcing the launch of the initiative, stated: "Fatherhood isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being present,” adding, “Some of the most important lessons a child will ever learn come from watching their father show up, encourage them, and lead by example. This partnership sends a powerful message to fathers across the state: you matter, your role matters, and All Pro Dad is here to help.”
So much respect has been shown for Coach Dungy throughout the years - he has become known as a reliable voice on behalf of the Christian faith and the pro-life cause. Since departing from coaching, he has been part of the Sunday Night Football broadcast team on NBC.
But, no more. And, in responding to his dismissal, he showed characteristic grace. He posted on X:

It’s disappointing news but I want to thank my NBC family for making the last 17 years so special. I’ll have lasting memories of my time there, especially with Rodney Harrison who has become a tremendous friend.
God has always directed me in these moments and while I’m not sure what the next step will be for me—whether it will be in football, in broadcasting, or getting more involved in church and community outreach —I know God has plans for my life and I can’t wait see them unfold. And I am reminded of one of my favorite verses in the Bible-Romans 8:28. “God works all things for His good for those who love the Lord.”

Whatever the coach does, I am confident he will continue to shine the light of Christ - and he's already showing that through his work with fathers. It reminds us of the tremendous role and opportunity that God has in store for fathers to be godly examples to their families, churches, and communities.
We can also think about how each of us can be instruments of God's grace. When let go by NBC, Dungy did not lash out, he didn't criticize his former employer. He submitted himself to God's plans. And, that's a great example how we can view change, as an opportunity that the Lord has afforded to us so that Christ might be glorified in and through us. Coach Dungy talked about leading by example, and that's something good to keep in mind as we respond to life's challenges.
